CONVERSATION WITH HUGO CARAPINHA, ARCHITECT AND NARRATOR OF LIVED SPACES
The kitchen as an act of listening
At Leiken, we often say that no two kitchens are alike—because no two people are. Few embody this idea as naturally as Hugo Carapinha, an architect by training and now Commercial Director of Leiken’s B2C division in Lisbon. We sat down with him for a conversation as an architect and narrator of lived-in spaces, to explore how form, function, and personality come together to shape truly personal environments.

From Architecture to Kitchens
Hugo, with your extensive background in architecture and design, how did you enter the world of kitchen design, and what led you to your current role?
My path to Leiken began with a role in Production Management, building on my experience in construction and coordination. Over time, I saw how closely commercial and production teams needed to work together. That insight led me to the commercial side, where I discovered a new level of creativity—especially in designing kitchens. It’s a different scale and a more direct relationship with the end client, which makes it both challenging and rewarding.
The Italian State of the Art
Leiken is known for its Italian design roots. What does ‘Italian state of the art’ mean to you?
Italian design is about balance — beauty, precision, and innovation working together. At Leiken, we take that heritage and translate it into kitchens that are elegant, intuitive, and built to last.
Designing for the Individual
How does Leiken ensure that each kitchen reflects the client’s personality?
A kitchen is not just a place to cook. It’s where life happens. We start each project by understanding our client’s lifestyle and personal preferences. From there, we design a space that feels like an extension of who they are.
Blending Form and Function
The balance between aesthetics and usability is central to great design. How does Leiken achieve this?
We begin with function — how the client lives, cooks, entertains. Then we bring in form — clean lines, refined materials, elegant finishes. The goal is a kitchen that works perfectly and looks exceptional.
Sustainable Luxury
Sustainability is increasingly important. How does Leiken integrate this into high-end design?
Luxury and sustainability are not opposites. We source responsibly, reduce waste, and use durable materials. Our goal is to create kitchens that are as responsible as they are refined.
The Evolving Kitchen
How has the role of the kitchen changed in recent years?
Today, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where people gather, not just cook. That shift has changed how we design — from closed-off utility spaces to open, multifunctional environments.
A Memorable Project
Can you share a project where the kitchen truly captured a client’s essence?
There was a home in Quinta Patino with a client full of energy and creativity. He loved to cook and host. The kitchen we created was vibrant, open, and filled with personal touches. It became the true heart of his home.
Looking Ahead
Where do you see Leiken heading in the next 5 to 10 years?
We’ll continue to lead in personalized, high-end kitchen design — blending technology, sustainability, and timeless style. Our mission is to create kitchens that not only serve a purpose but tell a story.
At Leiken, every kitchen tells a story — and we’re here to help you write yours.
